Lidl GB has confirmed it will extend its Lidl & Go self-scanning to a further 37 UK stores across the South East, South of England and Scotland in July, following an initial seven-store pilot.
Integrated with the Lidl Plus app, Lidl & Go allows customers to scan products as they shop, helping them track spending and savings in real time, before completing their purchases seamlessly at the checkout. The feature is available directly through customers’ own smartphones, meaning shoppers aren’t tied to using dedicated in-store scanning devices.
“Customers are telling us they value the control and visibility it gives them over their spend, and the flexibility to shop at their own pace,” said Lidl GB’s Chief Customer Officer, Louise Weise.
Ryan McDonnell, CEO of Lidl GB, said the discounter continues to “invest heavily in technologies that simplify everyday life, offering customers different options to suit their shopping preferences” for greater choice and control over how they shop.
The expansion of Lidl & Go forms part of Lidl’s increased investment in digital innovation, aimed at making shopping easier, more convenient and more flexible, while ensuring that traditional payment methods and staffed tills remain available across its estate.
That includes a significant +60% increased investment into personalised coupons on the Lidl Plus app this year, alongside the introduction of Lidl Points in May which offers a flexible rewards system that gives customers more control over their savings.
Lidl overtook Morrisons in May to become the UK’s fifth largest supermarket, now holding 8.6% market share, as discounter switching and value-led sales rise.
Switching played a key role in Lidl’s market share growth, with the discounter’s own data suggesting that in the past year it had won £611million worth of spend from rivals, with over 3 in 5 households now shopping at Lidl.
