From Amazon announcing a six-fold expansion of its drone delivery footprint in the U.S., to Iceland cutting retail theft with AI, and shoppers accelerating demand for personalised loyalty, what’s been making waves in retail this week?

Flying high: Amazon extends U.S. drone delivery footprint

Amazon has confirmed its ultrafast drone service, Prime Air, will expand to almost 500 cities and towns in the U.S. by the end of next year, creating fulfilment capabilities that are six times its existing footprint.

“Customers already turn to Amazon for fast Same- and Next-Day Delivery, and Prime Air provides them an even speedier option when they need it, with deliveries in as fast as 30 minutes,” said David Carbon, VP of Amazon Prime Air.

Prime Air drone delivery currently serves shoppers in cities across seven North American states, including Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska and Texas. It plans to launch in Georgia, Ohio, Illinois, Idaho and New York soon as part of its planned expansion.

Iceland cools retail theft with AI solution from SAI

Iceland has partnered with SAI, the active intelligence solution for stores, to significantly reduce shrink while honing operational effectiveness across its UK store estate.

Last year, Iceland estimated that theft cost its business around £20million in losses annually, preventing it from keeping prices low and reinvesting in staff wages.

It deployed the SAI One Platform, which blends computer vision with GenAI to turn passive store surveillance systems – across checkout, aisles and entrances – into an operational platform for real-time intelligence.

Using Vision AI to detect missed scans, partial payment and walkouts as well as in-aisle concealment and shelf swipe, the solution reduced the retailer’s losses by 80%.

“SAI is improving our worst 100 stores, which cost us about a third of our total shrink number,” Andy Edwards, Head of Loss Prevention & Corporate Audit at Iceland, said. “The platform is not just helping us reduce shrink, it’s also helping colleagues’ productivity.”

M&S backs Retail Trust’s Let’s Respect Retail campaign

M&S has announced its support for the Retail Trust’s ‘Let’s Respect Retail’ campaign, becoming the first major UK grocer to publicly back the initiative.

The campaign run by the Retail Trust aims to tackle abuse against shopworkers and encourages shoppers to show acts of courtesy, kindness and respect towards frontline staff.

“Our colleagues are at the heart of M&S and deserve to feel safe, respected and valued at work,” Thinus Keeve, Retail Director at M&S, commented.

“While the vast majority of customer interactions are positive, abuse should never be accepted as part of the job. That’s why we’re proud to become the first major UK grocer to support the Let’s Respect Retail campaign,” he added.

8 in 10 shoppers demand personalised loyalty perks

Even as consumers become less loyal to the brands they regularly shop with, UK retailers could be missing out on loyalty opportunities due to poor personalisation within their membership programmes.

New research from HyperFinity, which polled 2,000 UK shoppers, revealed that 79% of shoppers want personalised offers, with a quarter (23%) expecting perks to be highly personalised.

Yet, despite this expectation, 61% have been a member of a loyalty programme which felt no different than being a regular customer.

“Shoppers are not falling out of love with loyalty – they are falling out of love with programmes that treat them like everyone else,” Thomas Hill, Co-Founder of HyperFinity, commented.

Yankee Candle goes live on TikTok Shop amid social push

Yankee Candle has launched on TikTok Shop, marking a “significant step” in the brand’s digital retail strategy as it looks to expand its presence across social commerce.

The new digital storefront will be delivered in partnership with THG Commerce, a leading provider of cloud-native, AI-powered commerce technology, and will be supported by integrated fulfilment and secure payment processing.

As well as allowing shoppers to purchase directly via TikTok Shop, the storefront will also include exclusive customer offers, live shopping and tailored content.

Seel builds pre-loved into post-purchase, launching 1-click resale

Seel has launched a new 1-click resale capability allowing shoppers to recover value from purchases after they are no longer eligible for a return or refund.

By making resale available in the same portal where shoppers manage their orders, the solution offers customers a fast and convenient way to resell goods, supported by AI agents.

“Consumers shouldn’t have to lose out just because a return window closes. Resale gives shoppers more flexibility and a simple way to recover value from items they no longer need,” said Zack Peng, Founder & CEO of Seel.

The solution is already being used by retailers including Debenhams Group.
