Currys has launched a new campaign to encourage more tech recycling, as a new study shows UK consumers are sitting on a growing pile of over 880 million unused items.

With the average household hoarding 30 items each – with mobile phones the most commonly kept tech for four in five consumers – Currys has launched its ‘Track the Tech’ campaign, which highlights what happens to old devices which are brought in for recycling.

“People understand why recycling tech matters, but too often, that’s where it stops,” said Paula Coughlan, Chief People, Communications and Sustainability Officer at Currys.

From the speed and ease of recycling old tech to getting ‘cash for trash’, Currys new video aims to demonstrate how shoppers can play their part in reducing e-waste.

The findings also highlight the opportunity in refurbished tech. While 41% of consumers have bought refurbished goods, uptake varies significantly by age. Half (50%) of 18–34-year-olds have bought refurbed tech versus just 29% of over-55s.

“Track the Tech gives customers confidence that their data is secure and that their devices are put to good use,” Coughlan continued. “Our ambition is to give tech its longest life, making it simple, secure, worthwhile and reassuring for customers to pass it on.”
