Lidl has completed its two-stage extension at its Belvedere site in south-east London, investing £285 million across two buildings.

The first investment phase, which included the construction of a new second warehouse, cost £160 million, with the second stage involving the demolition of the original building to make way for a  396,000 sq ft warehouse, which has tripled capacity.

The supermarket now has 800,000 square feet of warehouse space at Belvedere, a 167% increase in capacity since 2003 when the site opened. Once fully operational, it will serve 120 stores and create 120 jobs.

“We’re proud to play our role in driving economic growth, while continuing to establish an infrastructure that delivers sustainable growth for our ambitious expansion plans. But these investments are not just about logistics. The updates today also represent an investment in our mission to make good food accessible to households across the country.”

Richard Taylor, Chief Real Estate Officer, Lidl GB.

In April, Lidl GB announced it would invest half a billion pounds in its expansion with plans to open more than 40 new stores across the UK. Last month, it began construction on a warehouse in Leeds. This will involve the retailer investing £150 million and, it says, will result in the creation of 400 new roles.
