As the school holidays get underway, UK retailers remain hopeful for a summer surge in spending, following a +4% increase in weekend High Street trips in Q2 compared to the first quarter of the year, data from Virgin Media O2 Business’ Movers Index.

Its latest quarterly Movers Index showed that over half (55%) of UK retailers expect the summer holiday period to have a positive impact on their business, as a quarter (25%) of consumers plan to increase spending over the next three months. To capitalise on improving consumer demand and maximise revenue, more than two fifths (41%) of retailers plan to introduce special summer promotions and discounts.

A welcome retail boost

Jessica O’Connor, Director of Product at Virgin Media O2 Business, said the latest Movers Index highlighted “the potential for summer to bring a welcome retail boost as Brits flock to the high street.”

She added that its mobile data showed “a surge in retail trips this quarter, signalling a promising shift in contrast with last year’s shopping dip over the same period.” Weekend High Street trips were down -1% in Q2 compared to 2024.

Tech-led shopping experiences help boost footfall

The Movers Index also highlighted the role of technology in bringing shoppers back to the High Street and encouraging footfall. It found in the last three months almost half (48%) of consumers frequently used tech to enhance their in-store shopping experiences.

The ability to pick up same-day deliveries from local stores (32%), access real-time stock availability (29%) and receive personalised in-store offers on mobiles (20%) were the top tech that would entice consumers to shop more in-person.

“Shoppers see the value of making purchases in-person, as long as the experience is smooth from the moment they step inside,” O’Connor said.

“For retailers, to the make the most of summertime spending, it will be key to provide customers with the in-store convenience and experience that they’re looking for – from real-time item availability to mobile promotions on high-demand items,” she concluded.
