Asda has announced that it will more than double its Electric Vehicle (EV) home delivery fleet as it looks to cut carbon emissions.
From this month, Asda will invest £1.3million to launch an additional 112 home delivery EVs, taking its total electric fleet to 194, as well as rolling out charging points for vans across its UK stores.
By September, 21 Asda stores will operate a fully electric home delivery fleet, with the EVs expected to make over a million deliveries between the launch and the end of the year. With a range of up to 130 miles, the electric fleet will help save an estimated 1,700kg of CO2 emissions per year.
“We’re always looking at how we can better serve our customers and for new ways to reduce our carbon emissions as a business,” said Emma Newton, Senior Director of Ecommerce Last Mile at Asda. “We’re delighted to be more than doubling our electric fleet of grocery home shopping vehicles.”
Last year, Asda invested in two new Bio-LNG (liquefied natural gas) refuelling facilities as part of its commitment to reducing overall carbon emissions. LNG offers a lower carbon alternative to diesel, making it a more eco-friendly choice of fuel.
Asda now operates the largest fleet of LNG fuelled trucks in the UK with over 780 vehicles.
