Adidas has confirmed it has been hit by a cyber attack, becoming the latest retailer to fall victim to cyber crime, following hacks at M&S, Co-op and Harrods

The sportswear brand said that “certain” customer data had been compromised by the hack, which is believed to have come from a third-party customer service provider.

Adidas was quick to confirm that the affected data does not contain customers’ passwords, credit card details or other payment information. The breach is understood to “mainly consist” of contact information from shoppers who had previously contacted its customer service help desk.

After becoming aware of the incident on Friday, Adidas said it “immediately took steps to contain the incident”, saying in a statement that it has launched a “comprehensive investigation” and is “collaborating with leading information security experts.”

The sportswear giant also said it was in the process of informing potentially affected consumers while following the advice of data protection and law enforcement authorities.

Adidas is the latest retailer to be targeted by cyber criminals in a spate of high profile cyber attacks, including the hack at M&S which brought its online operations to a standstill and scrambled its stock systems, creating product availability issues in stores.

M&S expects disruption caused by the cyber attack to continue to impact its online business through until July, and will cost the retailer an estimated £300million in lost operating profits, before insurance and mitigation.

Cyber crime group, Scattered Spider, are suspected to be behind the M&S hack, however it’s understood the same group aren’t currently being linked to the data breach at Adidas.
