Co-op will partner with VusionGroup to replace traditional paper labels with Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) across its almost 2,400-strong store estate by 2026. By digitalising the shelf-edge, Co-op aims to improve CX, enhance product information, reduce waste and simplify in-store operations.

The ESLs will enhance in-aisle product information for shoppers, providing clear, accurate and transparent product data, including allergy and nutritional info as well as country of origin and sourcing details. The digital labels can also communicate Co-op Member Price savings and offers in real-time, ensuring accuracy of pricing and promotions.

The solution will also support improved inventory management, while eliminating the paper waste associated with traditional paper labels.

The technology is expected to be deployed to around 1,500 stores by the end of this year, and to all Co-op stores by the end of 2026.

“With convenience at the heart of everything we do, Co-op is committed to continually exploring innovative technology that can improve how we operate,” Steven Logue, Head of Operations at Co-op, said.

“The electronic labels have the potential to make everyday tasks, like picking online orders, easier – improving ways of working, supporting our growth ambitions and enhancing the shopping experience for our members and customers.”

“We are immensely proud of this strategic partnership, Roy Horgan, CEO UK & Ireland at VusionGroup, said. “This collaboration exemplifies how technology can foster sustainability and improve the in-store experience of customers and colleagues.”

“Co-op’s rollout demonstrates its ongoing commitment to invest in physical stores, whilst enabling greater agility to react quicker to ever-changing market dynamics and customer needs,” Horgan added.

Future applications of the technology include simplifying everyday operational tasks and increasing operational agility. With flash capabilities the ESLs can also show colleagues where items should be placed when stocking and restocking shelves to improve labour productivity. In addition, where Co-op stores act as fulfilment hubs for Quick Commerce operations, the technology can highlight items required for a customer’s online grocery order, making picking orders quicker and easier.
